Accessories: Corbin, HeliBars, Tacki 'Fat Grips', LP Euro windscreen, Marsee mag tank bag.
Modifications: Factory Pro jet kit, K&N filter, Russell braided lines and speed bleeders, Fox Twin Clicker Shock, Race Tech Gold Valves & .90 springs, Two Bros. block off plates for removed PAIR system, Bobbed fender, Stock exhaust baffles removed. Two Bros Full Exhaust (Went back to stock after 3K miles of use...too much attention!), CBR mirrors and some goofy wide angle stick ons (CHP motor units still sneak up on me!)
Problems: Removed tank vent line after first rain storm. Rectifier replaced at 90k miles. Jetting was tough 'till I went to a 48 pilot. Gassing up twice a day. Other than that...Nothing!
Comments:
This is my 4th bike since I started scoot commuting a bit over 10 years ago. Not the most practical commute ride (it was a lust purchase), but the torque and sound keep things fun. I'd like to get something a bit more comfy with a real gas tank (VFR,FJR,..), but I can get a bigger trade in with the stuff stuck to the bottom of my boot than I could for a sportbike with a 120K on the clock. Anyways..the motors only using 2/3 quart of oil every week (600 miles)and still runnin' like raped ape. I wonder how long it will be before I need a new clutch? Maybe I should just see Kosman Engineering in Windsor to fab me up a new tank and have Corbin due a custom foam job on the seat.....Yeah, that's the ticket!

Accessories: Carbon Fibre Tank Protector. UPDATE December '98. Fitted "NEP Cruise Control" and "Ventura Bike-Pack System" - both easily fitted without modifications. UPDATE July99: no additions. UPDATE Nov2000: Hustler tank bag fits shape of tank quite well. ScottOiler at 63k, seems to be working well. UPDATE Nov 02: cruise control broken in ride-day crash, ScottOiler dispensing tip fell off on tour removed from bike. UPDATE July 2006: no additions
Modifications: Bafflectomy @ 9,000km! Mufflers seriously gutted. Bit loud, but sounds great out touring with plugs in. UPDATE July99: no additions. UPDATE Nov 02: 0.90kg/mm RaceTech fork springs (naked weight 91kg) with new spacers and 155mm air space, 10W fork oil. Raised forks 10mm. UPDATE July 2006: 160mm air space in forks since October 2002 (still 0.90kg/mm springs).
Problems: 1. The usual coolant leak, but only after harder riding. 2. Occasional random back-fire through carbies when idling at lights (more like a coughing sound). 3. Tends to back-fire (cough really) when using throttle to raise revs for down-change at lowish revs. Tend not to use throttle this way now. 4. A few times have found false neutrals - but not recently. UPDATE December 98. No more coolant leakage. Now only "coughs" when using throttle to raise revs for down-change when throttled-off for several seconds using engine breaking. Haven't found a false neutral for months. Seems to be running better as the kilometres increase! UPDATE July 99: Running great. Checked value clearances @ 24,000 - no adjustment required. Was a bastard to measure front clearances. Probably best to first detach radiators from frame. Fairing getting somewhat sandblasted from group riding. UPDATE Nov 00: 66k still no valve adjustment required. Only "problems": one headlight globe, one taillight globe, and globe for speedometre. UPDATE Nov 02: Ride-day crash April 01, new hand and foot brake levers, throttle sleeve, bar weight, front indicator, fairing scratched but not need replacing. Two valves re-shimmed at 87,000ks, all within spec at 134,000ks. Lugs on shock for holding preload setting wearing away with the many changes of setting. New steering bearings at 86,000ks. Shock not as compliant to road as forks replacement is next modification advice welcome. UPDATE July 2006: First significant problem!: June 2006 at 171,781ks the bike would not start. Research on this website and my diagnostic efforts strongly indicated the regulator/rectifier was the problem. I installed the new upgraded Honda part and problem seems to be solved. Valve clearances within specifications for the last 80,000ks! I'm still on the original battery.
Comments:
Awesome! I love this bike! Great handling on the road, sexy throbby feel, power everywhere, and it's real pretty. Loud clunk changing from neutral to first, first to second. Hard on wrists in slow continuous riding, especially down steep hills. But, hey! Find those big fast sweepers on quiet country roads and ...... is heaven this good? UPDATE December '98. Gearbox seems less clunky. Great bike. UPDATE July99: Small fuel tank! More range would be good for these long roads in the west. Found altering suspension settings gave more confidence at higher speeds. Rear: preload "softest" setting, rebound quarter turn from standard towards "hard". Front: preload to top ring, rebound third turn from standard towards "hard". My weight without riding gear = 95kg. Much more stable on fast sweepers with bumps. Could do with stiffer springs in forks - front sag still over 40%! UPDATE Nov2000: Fork preload to top ring, fork oil 15, raised forks 10mm, rebound standard setting - seems to work well. Shock preload up one from standard, rebound quarter turn to hard from standard. These settings give a firm suspension and best I've found so far. UPDATE Nov 02: Above settings too hard on road and too little of the suspension travel used. Current settings with 0.90kg/mm fork springs and 10W fork oil: Forks: preload standard settings, rebound half turn from highest settings, forks raised 10mm. Shock: preload lowest setting, rebound half turn from lowest setting. The motor seems to be running better than ever carb balancing important, follow workshop manual. Have not had a cough through carbies for a very long time. Gearbox still a bit clunky in lowest gears. This seems to be a very well bolted together motorcycle! UPDATE July 2006: The bike is running beautifully after the recent very major service and regulator/rectifier replacement.

Accessories: HeliBars, Tourmaster magnetic tankbag, Tourmaster Tail Pack, VistaCruise throttle lock, Lockhart swingarm stand, LP tank protector, National Cycle "Cheetah" windscreen. (4/27/02) Replaced the National Cycle windscreen (ugly but functional) with the tall one from Givi. Much higher quality. Haven't ridden yet. Sure looks better! It IS better!! (7/21/02)Replace the OEM seat with one from Sargent in Jacksonville, FL. What an improvement!
Modifications: TAILOCKER under seat storage. EUROSPORT carbon fiber "Hugger" rear fender/chain guard. 9/00: Replaced OEM air filter element with a K&N (finally). Definitely worth the bucks. Engine has more snap and fuel economy is up a couple mpg. (10/19/00) Just replaced plugs and the old ones had a nice color (gray instead of black). The K&N must be working. (4/7/01) Finished installation of Russell braided stainless front brake lines. Lines and fittings are nice but hardware is real junk. Lever feel is much firmer but I'm not convinced I have all the air out of the lines, yet. (6/07/2)Added braided stainless clutch and rear brake lines. Used Speigler (Dayton, OH) Top quality stuff. Puts Russell to shame. (09/02/02) Replaced OEM turn sigs with minis from K&S. Clear lenses with amber HALOGEN (read bright!) bulbs.
Problems: Note: My bike has never leaked from the water pump seal! Needed new rear wheel bearings & seals @ 28K miles. Burned out two headlight bulbs. Rear exhaust header is rusty. Rode 2300 miles the week of July 4th. Rode Deal's Gap on July 4th morning. (That was pretty cool.) Right front caliper outside pistons stuck. Cleaned the caliper (w/o disassy) and worked the pistons until the freed. All OK now. Have always used Kendall Supreme 10w40 engine oil. Will switch to Honda GN4 with next oil and filter. Believe I'm having some minor clutch trouble resulting from the auto-type oil. (11/28/00)When running hard and the brakes heat up, the front judders like crazy under heavy braking. My diagnostic guess is one or both front disks warp when hot. I've heard of others with the same trouble, but I have no direct evidence. Tough to check radial runout along the road. If anyone else has the same symptom or knows of the cure, please e-mail me. (4/7/01) Finished replacing front caliper piston seals. Some pistons were sticking causing premature pad wear.(7/21/02)Need steering neck bearings. Not such a difficult job, just a pain! (10/19/02) Well, after 63,000 miles, time for a new H2O pump seal. Job is done and after an 80 mile test, no more coolant from the weep hole! Hope I don't find too many alminum shavings in the coolant at next change. (4/04) Having backfire (afterburn) on decel. Will replace the anti fart valve soon. Have the part, but am in no hurry to tie up the bike since the weather has broken in Ohio. Backfire turned out to be caused by leaking exhaust header-to-pipe gasket. New alternator stator, regulator/rectifier and battery in 2008.
Comments:
This is the bike I've always wanted. Target is to break 50K miles in Y2K. (8/23/00: I'm not gonna make it.) Have always used Kendall Superb 10W40 engine oil. Switched to Honda GN-4 yesterday (8/22/00). Have some concern that the automotive oil may be the cause of an occasional "squeek" from my clutch encountered on 'jackrabbit' starts. Shifts are excessively noisey too, but that seems to be the nature of the beast. Stay tuned.....9/13/00: No conclusion yet regarding the change to Honda GN4 oil. 9/25/00...Ready for another oil change. After this one, I expect to be able to detect whether or not the GN4 oil makes a difference. (10/19/00) No noticeable changes resulting from the Honda brand oil. Clutch still "squeeks" on jackrabbit starts, but no slippage. Considering switching to Bridgestone BT010s with the next tire change. Anybody had any experience with that tire? (11/02/00)Thanks to all who fed back tire info to me. Today I mounted and balanced BS BT56SS. Haven't ridden yet, but I hope to scrub them in this weekend. Also did 48,000 mile maintenence today. Cartridge forks are a pain in the arse. Ordered a '01 GL1800 (Pearl Hot Rod Yellow), but no way will I off the Superhawk! Although, believe me, the new GL performs a lot like a sport bike in dresser clothing. (I know this because I'm very closely connected to the GL1800.) The BT56SS tires are A-OK. Turn in is much easier and there's plenty of traction. Now if they'll just outlive the 207s. (11/12/00) Rode 450 miles this weekend. May be (thanks to Ohio weather) the last long ride of Y2K. Temp hit all of 51F yesterday, 47F today. My hands damn near froze. Wonder if the charging system will handle heated grips? Anyone know? I'm really liking the BT56SS tires. Seem to have plenty of grip and good feedback even on cold pavement. Well it's 12/3/00 and the Superhawk has been tucked away for the winter. (Damnit) Didn't quite make it to 50K miles. Broke the bike out of storage on 3/4 last spring. Hope I can do as well next year. (02/25/01) At last, the Superhawk is out of winter storage and back in the garage! Rode 23 miles but the wind kept blowing me off the road, so I cut it short. Welcome 2001. (3/24/01) Bike was in for routine valve adjustment (3 valves were tight) and carb sync. Seemed like the enricheners (chokes) weren't working too well, so I asked for a diagnosis. As it turns out, the enrichener valves were quite worn. The plating was completely gone from one and about 50% gone from the other. Those were replaced and result is good. Now, if we can just get a break in the weather. (07/23/01) Long time now speak. Well the VTR is due for a clutch. The "squeek" on jack rabbitt starts has never gone away and now I can make it slip on a hard 1-2 shift. No worry. Never had a bike that went so long without a clutch. Also will replace the right front brake rotor and hope the severe judder goes away.(10/03/01 It did!) Poor VTR hasn't had a lot of use this year. Been spending too much time on the new GL1800. (10/03/01) Just returned from VIR. Final AMA Superbike race of 2001. Great racing, nice facility, needs more spectator viewing area. Really a kick-ass track. All the riders liked it. The VTR performed perfectly, of course. Really love the mountains in West Virginia! Going back to those mountains in 3 weeks. (11/18/01) Well, the ole SuperHawk is put away for another winter. Still sold on the BT56SS tires! Two more friends bought VTRs this fall. Hope Honda doesn't discontinue the model for the US market. See you all in the spring. (4/15/02)Well, springtime fianlly found Ohio! Been riding the VTR back and forth to work. God, what a great bike. Another friend in Alabama bought one just a couple weeks ago. (6/07/02)Finally getting to ride a little. Ohio has been the place for monsoons this spring! (7/21/02)Attended the Vintage Motorcycle Days at MidOhio this weekend. What a gas! (8/15/02) Did VIR with some buds. Four VTRs and one XB9R Firebolt. My Hawk continues to get 40+ mpg no matter how hard I thrash it. (9/16/02)Ahhh, nothing like a four day in West Virginia. (10/07/02)Although, northeastern Kentucky has maybe the best roads east of the Mississippi. (11/29/02) Well, the ol' SuperHawk was put into hibernation today. Bummer!! See you all next season. Happy Holidays. (01/25/03)Damn, it's been cold in Ohio. Hasn't been above freezing yet this year! WuHoo! It's SuperHawk time again. Got the ole gal out last weekend and had a great time. We finally have springtime in Ohio. (5/17/03) Since Bridgestone discontinued my favorite BT56SS tires I decided to try the Metzlers. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! However, I think the wear may accelerate. I don't think I'll get 5,500 miles out of a rear. But man, the traction! May be worth the shorter life. The SuperHawk had it's 64,000 mile valve adjustment a couple weeks ago and the front cylinder exhausts were both a little tight. No biggie. BTW, you guys in California, your roads have nothing on northwestern Kentucky. (06/19/03) Long time no write. SuperHawk is running as good as ever. What a sweet ride. The Metzler M1s are by all means the stickiest most confidence inspiring tires I've ever experienced on a bike. But there's a price: the rear will be done in 3K miles. For a sport touring application, that's B---S--T! Anyone had experience with Contis? I've always had good luck with Continental tires on other bikes, but never tried their radials. The M1 front is in good shape and the Conti has a very similar profile, so I'm inclined to replace the rear with a Conti and wear out the M1 front before switching. Anyone's thoughts are appreciated. BTW, the below listed stuff is still FOR SALE! (8/6/03) Well, the rear Sportec (stuck like glue) lasted 3,200 miles! I don't do burnout or wheelies, just ride hard. That's crap mileage for a street tire. Not enough miles on the Conti to offer an opinion, but initially it seems just fine. Headed for VIR soon then Barber. That oughta be enough miles on the right kinds of roads to make a good judgement on the Conti. (9/24/03) Just returned from Barber. What a cool place. The Conti rear now has almost 4K miles and still looks good. Think it may be a keeper. Did VIR and Barber since the last entry. Gettin' tired of riding in the rain!! The ole VTR is running as strong as ever and the fuel economy is still pretty good (except during top end blasts). Got as high as 46 mpg on one tank and as low as 35 on another. Anyone have "like new" OEM mufflers for sale??? (11/11/03) Well, the season is about over in Ohio. The Conti Force rear has been so good, I'll use Contis front and rear next change. May get one more short ride this year depending on Mother Nature. I'll report in. (4/04) Finally got the SuperHawk home this month. New tires were fitted over the past weekend and it's ready to go. Got good mileage and great traction from the ContiForce on the rear, so both ends now have that tire. (8/08/04) Man, what a lousy riding season. Can't remember so few miles. The ole Hawk is running well, but has developed a backfire at low revs on decel. Replaced the main PAIR valve, but to no avail. At least I have VIR coming up to look forward to. BTW, the Contis are doing great. (11/07/04) Well, the ole Hawk is in hibernation again. Too bad this year had so much going on/lousy weather. Only logged a little over 5K miles......the least since I got the bike. Hopefully next year will be better for riding. Everyone have a good winter. (9/11/05)Well, it's been too long since I updated my info. The SuperHawk is still keeping me happy and the new Pilot Roads are just fine. I hope they last! The bike needs a rear cylinder cam chain tensioner. Occasionally the rear cam chain makes a pretty good rattle, so I guess I better get hot on that. BTW, I was not so pleased with the last set of Conti Force tires. They're made in Korea! (10/29/05) Well, the SuperHawk is put up for the winter again. God how I hate this time of year. The Michelin Pilot Roads seem to be the schiznitz. Did an 1,800 mile trip to the Smokies a few weeks back and rode in all kinds of conditions. They did just fine and are confidence inspiring. Looks like the mileage may be worth the extra bucks, too. I'm still riding; the Wing is still in the garage. See you next season. Well troups, welcome to the remainms of the worst riding year I've had since 1997. Between work and the weather, I managed fewer than 4K miles on the Super Hawk in 2006. What a bummer! The bike still runs great, but some of the plastic parts are showing their age. (Fading and check marks in the paint.) Everyone have a safe winter and we'll see you in the (Ohio) spring. (6/1/07)Greetings! It's been a while, but the VTR and I are still in action. It still runs well and we enjoyed almost 1K miles in the mountains of West Virginia over the memorial Day holiday. (8/08/07) Still going strong but will need sprockets (first time) with next chain replacement. Headed to Ozarks for a week in October, so drive train will be new by then. Conti Road Attacks are doing very well. May get 6K miles out of the rear. Headed back to WV for Labor Day weekend. Report after that. (01.04.09) Didn't realize I was this far behind on an update. The SuperHawk still runs great (I'm slowing down a bit)with 103,500 miles on the clock. Still running Conti Road Attacks. Got 6,500 out of the last rear. Coulda gone at least 1K more but the front was shagged, so replaced both. NOTE: The ole Superhawk was traded on May 26, 2009 with 104,700 miles on the clock. The Superhawk is dead, long live the FZ1 Retro. End.

Experience: 30+ years, 1st 10 dirt & last 20+ street & some dirt still...
Bikes Owned: 13 (5 currently, Honda XL250R, Honda NT650, Kawasaki Concours, Yamaha FZ1 & Superhawk)
Accessories: Corbin seat, Heli bars, foam grips, Second Look tank bra, NEP throttle lock, Dunlop 205 tires, RKA mini saddlebags, Eclipse Sportbike tankbag. Update:2/17/98 added Yoshimura RC-3 Cannisters with the ZRS baffle. Update: 2/27/98 installed my fourth rear tire, staying with the Dunlop D205 and got 5000 miles out of the last one (my first two rear tires were the D204 and got 3500 out of each of them). Love the sound of the Yoshimuras! Update 3/17/98...Replaced the front tire with a 204, I got 7250 out of the original and 7000 out of the 205 and prefer the stickier 204. I'm still on my fourth rear tire (another D205) and will stay with these for awhile as I'm getting around 5000 miles of good use out of them... I wanted to try the Avon Azarros, but so far, I'm pretty well satisfied... Also put out $45.00 for the "Hyper White" headlight bulb that draws the normal 55/60 watts, but is supposed to be equivalent to 90/100!, it looks interesting, but I haven't had a chance for a decent night ride to test it out.Update: 5/29/98 the Hyper White works extremely well and I've had no complaints, some complements from other riders who I'm following regarding how it stands out, etc. Now on my fifth rear tire... went back to a 204 to match the current front tire figuring they will both be worn out at about the same time and I can then get a set of either the 207's or some Azarro's? Also had to replace the rubber cushions between the rear sprocket and hub as all of the connectors that hold the two pieces together had broken, what a hassle to get them in there while putting the sprocket back in. I have no idea why they would have all broken, but possibly the Suzuki/Kawasaki dealer who replaced and installed the last rear tire screwed up? Update: 6/19/98 the last rear tire (D204) picked up a nail with only about 1500 miles but I don't like riding on patches so I replaced both front & rear with the D207's... with about 700 miles on them I am loving them!!! 7/30/98 getting ready for a 2500+ mile ride and wanted fresh/new rubber and went with a set of 205s. 10/20/98 got 5700 miles out of the rear 205 and decided to timidly try the patched/pluged 204 that I had saved and only had 1500 miles on. 11/20/98 picked up a stupid drill bit in the rear tire and determined this 204 was cursed... trying the Avon Azaros (front & rear) only had 2700 miles on the cursed 204 and about 7000 on the 205 front. 12/13/98 love the Azaros... 1000 miles and sticking like I can't believe, better than the 207's?, very possibly, wait to see the longevity!! 1/29/99: With only 2600 miles the rear Azaro was toast! I admit I was riding reasonably "hard" but not any differently than on the previous Dunlops (204's, 205's & 207's) and they all lasted at least 1000 miles longer. The Azaro did stick well but with the longevity of a gerbil bunking with a pit bull. The experiment is over I'll stay with the Dunlop 207's!
Modifications: . Corbin seat, Heli bars, 2/17/98 Yoshimuras installed with the ZRS baffle. 4/10/98 installed "Hyper-White" headlight bulb. 6/09/98 installed Fox "Twin Clicker" rear shock. 7/07/98 the Fox shock is the best modification I've made, what a difference! 7/20/98 Replaced wind screen with a Lockhart-Phillips "speed screen" in dark smoke...looks cool.
Problems: 1. Hit a pig, broke the lower (useless) chin fairing/oil filter cover - $75.00. Broke the pig also. 2. Backing out of garage, tweaked the left (useless) mirror - $75.0 3. Lousy fuel milage (30 to 35 mpg) and too short of range between fill-ups. 4. 4/10/98 while installing a new headlight bulb the retaining spring/wire (bent paperclip thingy) was dropped and stepped on (promptly broke like a pretzel) Guess what... you can't buy this spring/wire, you have to buy the whole headlight assembly ($200), thank God for a decent dealer and warrantees! 5. 7/02/98 At 18000 miles El Nino's rain & the propensity for that fabulous engine pulling the front end up in the air finally tweaked my original chain... replaced both sprockets (standard front & one tooth up on the rear to a 42)...cost approximately $250.00. Keep the chain out of the rain and the front end on the ground and you might see 30000 out of your chain/sprockets! 6. 11/20/98 picked up a drill bit in the rear tire that had one plug in it already (a Dunlop 204 with less than 3000 miles on it)... found the bit while at an accessory shop which was out of D207's but had the Avon Azzaros which I had wanted to try anyway, $300 later I got the set... will let you know how they work/last, etc. The rear only saw 2600 miles and was pretty well shot... see above under "accessories". 7. 5/16/99 Chains are only lasting 17,000 to 18,000 and then developing a "kink" that no amount of snake oil will get out... The shop said this isn't that unusual that 15,000 to 20, 000 is the range. 8. 11/23/99 Replaced the rear brake rotor as it was showing severe signs of wear, like getting pretty thin? This was rider a induced 'problem' as I have always over used my rear brakes... replaced with a Galfer rotor for $120, not bad for 47,000 (s)miles. 7/09/00 Had to order a new fuel control valve that mounts to the bottom of the gas tank as the fuel flows even without vacuum... guess that the diaphram has developed a tear, or hole. This diaphram is not available except as a complete unit ($150). (9/23/01) The original battery was taken out by the original regulator/rectifyer not doing it's job. There was too much juice getting past and into the battery which resulted in a tea kettle situation with a cute whistle coming from under the seat. Replaced the battery with the same type and Electrex came through with a heavy duty regulator/rectifyer with a 1 year warrantee (the OEM has no such promise!). Looking over how many miles I've gotten these 'problems' seem pretty minor... Let's RIDE! (10/06/01)Blew out a diode in the new 'heavy duty' rectifier... Eletrex stood behind their product and has even developed a new one that they will be exchanging with me as soon as they are available! Hope the new exchanged unit will last the five weeks expected for delivery of the updated version... stay tuned. (11/06/01) The 2nd Electrex rectifier also only lasted about 600 miles. I contacted Electrex directly and they sent me out another new one that they said was of higher quality and explained to me that they had had some production problems (quality control?). Anyway, I have the third Electrex rectifier installed and it now has gone over the 600 mile mark... hopefully we got the problem solved! 1/13/02 Can't break this thing! Just keeps ticking and running and running and running, gotta love it! 5/12/03 The water pump 'mechanical seal' finally started allowing coolant to pass out the weep hole and had to be replaced. In doing so the propeller and shaft was ultimately replaced also, but only after assembling the whole thing together and then discovering that the old shaft was slipping and allowing the propeller to grind away at the water pump case. With a new prop/shaft installed it looks like we are ready for the next 90,000. 7/23/06 Had the bike in a kind of "frozen animation" here lately due to a charging problem... another rectifyer (3rd one) seems to have taken care of that, now I need to quite down the cam chains and am looking to replace the original tensioners with some A.P.E. items and hope I can score another 100,000 (s)miles out of her...
Comments:
What a blast! I've been riding 36 out of my 49 years and have never had as fun a motorcycle. The power available throughout the rpm's combined with the outstanding handling is just fantastic! While I complain about the short fuel range, it is always fun to watch and listen to the reactions of others at the pumps. Since the warantee is about used up (had no claims) I will be looking for some pipes. I'm leaning towards the Yoshimura's with the "ZRS" baffle and no jets. With the saddle bags and the tank bag I can easily "tour" on this machine for a weekend (I might even try a week). The combination of the Corbin seat and Heli bars pretty well took care of any discomforts such as a sore bottom and aching wrists and I can comfortably ride all day. Lately with all of this rain I've not been getting the riding in that I normally would, although I have baptized the bike and can state that it isn't too bad a ride in the rain, I'm too much a sissy to continue the wet riding for any longer than getting home and I won't intentionally ride when raining. Get this El Nino crap out of here! 2/14/98 Update... I ordered the Yoshimuras and expect them within a week, or so and will let you know how they work, has anyone else gone with this ZRS baffle? I've been told that there shouldn't be any need to rejet with this system! Sure hope so. I'm not looking for more power, just like the appearance and hope they sound better than the vacuum sound of the stock pipes. 2/17/98 , pipes came and were installed in less than 30 minutes (I had taken the stock cannisters off the night before). Cannisters went on smoothly, I questioned Yoshimura about not having any "cuts" , or expansion slots on the end connecting the cannister to the headers, but was assurred no such slots were required and they did fit tightly without any need... will keep registry posted as to need for any rejetting, or other calibration of carbs, etc. 4/14/98 El Nino be damned, I went riding this weekend in the Napa wine country (only got a little rain) the Yoshimura's are still singing a beautiful song and no carb adjustment appears to be called for with over 2000 funfilled miles. 5/03/98 I took the bike in and had the 16000 mile service done by the shop (too lazy) ... the valves did not require any adjusting, just replace oil/filter, plugs, airfilter and balance the carbs $350.00 (ouch!). The bike does seem to run a little better with even less popping on deacceleration. I kept the old plugs (at $10.00 each they must have gold in them), the old plugs looked good as far as color (nice brown, no white, or grey) and I didn't rejet at all for the Yoshimura cans. Took a 500 mile, one day ride, last week and the machine just performed flawlessly. 7/07/98 El Nino is gone! The Sierra Passes are open, wave if you see me I'll be hanging out around Tioga, Sonora, Ebbetts, Monitor or maybe Carson... 8/12/98... don't let anyone tell you that you can't tour on this machine, I loaded up my RKA saddlebags, Eclipse tank bag & Lockhart seat bag and took off for a 2200 mile five day trek across Nevada, Utah, into Colorado & back. What a blast!!! Rode with two BMW's a CBR 1000 and a Kawasaki Concours... the Crimson Ride was a champ... nobody was "comfortable" through the desert drone, but when the canyons and mountain twisties came the Hawk went like hell! One day included 675 miles from Torrey, Utah to Minden, Nevada absolutely loved it. Update: 2/14/99 Just got back from a 1300 (s)mile, three day jaunt to Death Valley... had a blast, even picked up a damn speeding citation, oh well, you have to expect to pay if you are going to play!! 2/27/99 Just had the 32000 (s)mile service done... I wish I had the time/know-how, but this shop (Mallot's Honda of Manteca, CA) does a good job, cost was $360 for labor & parts (ouch)! Was told that the carbs were still in synch and that the valves did not require any adjustment (they didn't at the 16,000 service either!), I was impressed! I LOVE THIS MACHINE! Let's RIDE!! 7/09/00 With 54000 miles I finally had the bike's 48000 mile service done. Still no valve adjustment was required! Synchronized the carbs, replaced the fluids (hydralic's still turn black), new plugs, oil/filter plus a new air filter and she's ready to RIDE! The mechanic noted that the fuel valve at the tank leaked gas and did not turn off as it should without vacuum so we are replacing that figuring the diaphram to be torn and is not available for replacement except as a $150 unit. Overall, still extremely happy with this machine! 10/28/00 Update: 60,000 miles and she is still running strong... just keep the oil clean, fresh rubber on the rims and Let's RIDE! 7/16/01 Update: 72,000 miles and had her in for her fourth check out by the shop. Again NO VALVE ADJUSTMENT NEEDED... unbelievable! The mechanic stated that the tolerances were all right in the middle of what is reccommended! All those oil/filter changes and riding sanely (i.e. staying away from prolonged redline running) seems to pay off. I still don't use any oil between changes and the worst thing I have to worry about is the short life span of rear tires (about 4,000 miles). LET'S RIDE!!! 1/13/02 This has been the most fun motorcycle I've owned in 30+ years of riding. With 80,000 (s)miles on her I think she is about broken in and ready to face the next big hurtle of 100,000! Let's RIDE!

Problems: 11/04/04 replaced reg/rect.,failed at 32,000 mi.Dealer wanted $204.00,bought 2 used ones on ebay for $29.00 each.the same one fits cbr600 f2 f3,cbr900RR.4/15/05 replaced bad rear wheel bearings.03/12/08 reg/rect. plug melted, replaced with 07 GSXR unit. It's twice the size and heavily finned. It also has 2 extra leads, pos. and gnd that i pieced out and ran directly to the battery.Got this tip from the Superhawk Forum. Now have 13.6 volts at idle and 14.5 at 3000 rpm.
Comments:
1/20/03 CHECK YOUR TPS [throttle pos sensor] it controls ignition advance and must be at 5k ohm, mine was set at 7.2k I had poor throttle response below 3500rpm and was only getting 30-33 mpg and plugs were black with fuel. I now get 38-42 mpg, crisp throttle everywhere, the plugs burn clean and is smooth as silk at cruise. I'ts totaly transformed the bike. don't rejet without checking this while carbs are off the bike. my jetting is 50 pilots 2.75 turns on screws factory jet kit needles in middle groove and stock 175F/178R mains with stock air filter.IT'S PERFECT!!! I tried at least 10 different jetting combos, but it was a waste of time until I set the TPS.When I use my K&N filter I use 178F/180R main jets.If you have any questions feel free to call or email me.4/22/05 Replaced bad rear wheel bearing, discovered while mounting new Bridgestone 014's.Rear wheel had side play, could barely feel it by hand, but could hear it click side to side.I bought the bearings from a local bearing supplier found in the phone book for less than half the dealers price, bearing #6204 double seal, bearing # is the same for all bearing manufacturers.Just tell the supplier you want their best quality bearing.1/12/07 now at 49,000 mi. I had been running Bridgestone 014's,2 rears /1 front per season GREAT TIRES!! and could stretch about 5k out of a rear.I changed to the Pirelli Strada's and got 7,500 mi. out of the first rear, just mounted another one and the front will last until its gone. No traction issues, although the front steers a little heavier not bad, just a different feel than the 014's.I used a tire durometer to compare the Strada's to the 014's and their just as soft, just more rubber,7mm to the wear bar vs 5mm on the rears.Replaced cam chain tensioners, just for peace of mind. The engines not any quieter so the the originals must have been ok.Checked the valves at 48,000,all still in spec.2/9/08 53,500 mi.,just installed a set of Pirelli Diablo Corsa's,a friend took them off of his RC51 after 1 track day and sold them to me for $50.00,I'm sure they won't last as long as the Strada's but the price was to good to turn down.Still runs like new, gotta love these Honda's!!! I've gotten hooked on the Superhawk forum, lots of great info. Update:11/06/2014 82,000 mi. still runs like new !!!! 3/10/21 87,000 miles, still runs great. I don't ride much anymore, all my riding buddies either got to old and quit riding or died but I just can't let her go.

Comments:
The bike that got me started again on 2 wheels. Always great fun to flog... er, ride because of its torky, racy feel and SOUND. Big vee-twin engine pulse and exhaust rumble. Tractable and useable power. Lose the stock canisters! With after-market cans the sound-track alone is worth the purchase price and gives an edge to its character. Impressive low rpm grunt, more mid-range and top end grunt with the stage 1 cams. Still the best 10 grand I ever spent - vee-twin power, feel and sound makes for an amusing ride! MAINTENANCE (besides routine stuff): 1. Coolant pump seal wore out at 35,000 km, engine cover removed and dropped-off at the shop for seal replacement ($80 parts and labor, bfd). 2. Drive chain and sprockets replaced at 55,000 km and again at 98,000 km ($400). 3. Squealing clutch, still functional but decided to rebuild it at 86,000 km as preventive maintenance with an upgraded EBC street racer clutch kit ($350). UPDATE 06/4/7 - new battery installed - amazing the original lasted 7 seasons. UPDATE 06/4/15 - fine quality Corbin leather seat installed. Very well made, great looking and functional. Makes a difference in riding comfort and greatly enhances the bike's appearance. UPDATE 06/8/23 - thought the alternator was shot as the lights were flickering at idle and the battery wasn't charging fully. Turned out to be just a loose +ve terminal battery connection. Doh! UPDATE 08/8/14 - EBC StreetRacer clutch installed. UPDATE 09/3/28 - first ride! Celebrating 10 years with this bike! UPDATE 10/4/17 - valve clearances adjusted. UPDATE 11/4/16 - fuel valve rebuilt and carbs synched. UPDATE 12/3/21 - new chain and sprockets installed, 44T rear sprocket - up 3T, much better. UPDATE 15/5/24 - replaced blown starter relay.

(MCA) Lowered front by 25mm and raised rear by 5mm. Cut the rear mud guard for looks. Removed the resistor in the plug leads and replaced it with a steel shaft for better spark.
Problems: Thermo switch on radiator failed and cost around $98 Aus to replace. Used a Microswitch and rewired to suit. Rectifier failed due to lack of air flow - this is a design fault. Replaced the rectifier with a new one and added a heat sink with a cooling fan from a computer. Size of fuel tank. Had a slight coolant leak, but it cleared itself.

This is the best bike for the price with the most fun and cheap to maintain. They just grow on you! The mighty VTR. I want to rebuild the engine at 150,000 kms through Vee Two in Bathurst. More ponies to nail those Ducks in the straight.

Sharkskinz lower fairing w/ one piece upper.Sharkskinz solo race tail with euro tail enclosure. Afam sprockets. Storz 7 position steering damper.
Modifications: Factory titanium jet kit w/ Jardine tuck under slip-ons, Nickey Hayden replica system. Smog plugs added, and emissions deleted (actually runs better). rear fender removed w/ custom license plate bracket. lots of little bolt-on's added. 900rr forks machined for the front, that was a good improvement. I painted the bike blue since my girl doesn't like red.I just recently painted my wheels to match, but polished the outside lip(where it was machined from honda). Custom vinyl stickers from the european "Firestorm" made for the new paint job. Dropped a tooth in the front.Recently took the heads off, ported polished and did a 3 angle valve job, along with shavin .0020 off the heads, woo hoo. now it does monster wheelies with very little effort in 3rd, and sometimes in 4th gear!!!. waitin for the old lady too up my allowance so i can get Yoshy cams & pistons. Sept 9 '00 it was unfortunatly vandalized, but the insurance came through and bought all new stuff. It now has all sharkskinz upper bodywork on it to match my existing lower. very nice, light and durable. It deletes the little running light above the headlight though. Dec 20th, bought sharkskinz solo tail that slides over the stock seat with a eurotail style undertail enclosure. I 'm still tryi'n to figure out some tailight issues though. Never the less, it looks GREAT!! Jan 25th, finally got a thin LED strip light for the tail. Looks AWESOME. brighter than the stock tailight by FAR!!
Problems: I bought the bike with 800 miles on it. It was the showroom bike that the owner rode home every day. he said that he didn't have any problems.I have had a few problems with it.It has stalled a few times under hard braking. it's backfired a few times too.I also blew a fork seal on the right tube when i came down from a wheelie. The next summer i blew the left fork seal. AS of June 99 tuned carbs and runs great nothing else has been done. It seems to be a pain in the ass keeping the head bearings tight for some reason. It goes to the dealer about every three months to get tightened.Sept 2000, went to the dealer AGAIN for the right fork tube and the head bearing. I'M PISSED OFF (maybe it's the wheelies)
Comments:
This is one wheelie happy machine. I love riding it, but the suspension is a little soft, even though the preload is cranked up. the new forks helped a lot. Took it for a spin around a local race track, it did a hell of a lot better then i thought it would. I learned the hard way why they say not to put GP tires on it since it doesn't have a full perimiter frame. oops, i high-sided. The new paint job with the euro stickers looks awsome!! many compliments on it. The red just had to go. Why ride something that looks just like everyone else's???

Accessories: Second Look tank protector, Chase-Harper saddle bags (huge) and tankbag when touring, throttle lock, Valentine One radar detector. 06/00 - Just added TBR preload adjusters and TBR footpegs. Surprisingly, the footpegs were an excellent addition, providing much more traction while hanging off without sacrificing comfort the rest of the time. Well worth the money.
Modifications: Removed the side reflectors, peg feelers, charcoal cannister. Two Brothers oval aluminum street exhaust with stainless steel pipes (ROARRRR!). Took the front sprocket down one tooth (better acceleration in exchange for top speed, which I don't use often). // Update (2-20-00) Air cleaner needed changing so I switched to K&N, which threw the mixture off surprisingly much. I then had a Dynojet Stage 1 kit installed to fix this. It still needs some fine-tuning but is MUCH smoother and feels a bit stronger as well. // Update (4-3-00): It's taken this long to get that darn Dynojet kit sorted, and it's still not perfect! It's finally rideable though; before, it was dying at stop signs and stumbling a lot. I should've left the stock air filter and carb settings... Live and learn. // Update (4-20-00): Took the bike to another shop, now the carbs are 95% dialled and I think I'm stopping there. Also, new to the bike are an Ohlins shock and RaceTech Gold Valves up front. I still need to adjust sag and other settings but I can tell already that both these mods are nice! The RaceTech forks were definitely money well spent, while the Ohlins shock seems to be worth slightly less than it cost. Again, live and learn. B)
Problems: If your bike starts dying in the rain, remove or shorten the small hose that connects to the gas tank's vent hole. Worked for me!
Comments:
Purchased new on 6/3/97 for $9,500 out the door. Everything the reviewers in the magazines said is true. // The Two Brothers pipes were a major pain to put on, but they sound more like a Duc and give a noticeable performance improvement. Very nice looking in aluminum, too. Fairly loud for street pipes, but it's a nice mellow bass and nobody's ever complained about them. // Like Steve Sands, I just had my 48k checkup and didn't need a valve adjustment either! This bike is so solid, it's amazing for the first model year. Also like Steve, I am still as in love with my bike today as I was when I first rode it off the showroom floor.

Comments:
My VTR's 10th birthday was in March 2003, and it still runs strong and true. I still have my 1976 RD400 I'm converting back to street but have sold off my other 4 motorbikes over the last 10 years, which is why my VTR only has 55k on it. Due to bicycle incident, I've converted my VTR into a sporty sport-tourer. Gas milage is a sore point (33~36) but my big tank helps on tours (as does a 1.23 qt emergency gas bottle). The forks are due for a rebuild and valve massage this winter; the Penske got one early this year. Its a keeper, and anyway, no one would pay what its really worth.
For Sale: Top Triple Clamp, Silver, Very Good Condition: $40 plus shipping?

Accessories: Tourmaster mini-magnetic Tank Bag, Lockhart Front & Rear Wheel stands, Lockhart Tank Bra, Aluminum 41T Rear Sprocket
Modifications: De-baffling of cans (nice sound, but I think the mid range may have suffered a little). Also "Custom" modified right side fairing by dropping in parking lot when 3 days old! Forgot about the disk lock. $250.00 for new fairing, $$thousands worth of regret and mental anguish.Replaced following week. Updated Regulator/rectifier to 2002 VTR Model; better design and doesn't overcharge battery any longer.
Problems: Water pump weep off and on, never heavy, intermittent loud tick from right side of engine I cant seem to locate (not too often, but alarming when it does it)lots of popping on decel, with an occassional, (rare) huge backfire, near tank-slapper headshake when accelerating hard in 1st or 2nd and front end comes up.UPDATE 11/28/00-after one year, no more water pump weep, no more ocassional heavy engine tick, only gobs of fun. UPDATED 6/30/2004: Cam chain tensioner let go on freeway commute home, god-awful clatter! Luckily no additional damage, but can't wait to get my VTR back. Having major tune up done at same time...Total $880 (ouch!!))
Comments:
Most of my 15 bikes I owned the first 15 of my 31 years of riding, and most of them were crap! But since getting back on the street in '87 I've owned a few really enjoyable rides......a BMW R65LS (still have), Suzuki Katana, Yamaha Vision, 2 550 Honda's (still have both)and a Yamaha FJ1200. The VTR is without a doubt not only the best made (the little beemer was close in quality), but by far the biggest kick in the ass to ride. This bike is just too much fun, more than a 50 year old should be allowed to have !
For Sale: 77 Honda 550K parts. Complete front end (minus left turn signal), side covers, tank, instruments, most electrics and controls. email egbillc@citlink.net

Modifications: raised forks in triple clamps 5mm. seemed to make a difference in snappy handling
Problems: LP flushmount sigs look great but mounting shaft melts due to heat from sidemounted radiators. Stock seat sucks. 12/01 put stock pipes and turn sigs back on. D&Ds came apart at the rivet holes. Cut the baffles out of the pipes prior to mounting to provide for airflow similar to the aftermarkets. UPDATE Put the Jardine RT Ones on and with the brackets to retain the passenger pegs. Sound and look great and substantially lighter. Bidding on a Corbin and kicking around the idea of Helibars.

RED 2001 VTR1000 (Updated: 2008.12.21)

Location: USA (SouthEast) -- Palm Bay Florida

Accessories: None
Modifications: None - I like it just as it is! If I wanted a track bike, I would have bought a track bike.
Problems: I experienced the usual stumble and occasional stall when the bike was new up to about 3000 miles. In each instance of stalling, the bike started right back up immediately. I never saw the coolant leakage or ‘weep’ that other VTR owners have described. At about 7000 miles, the headlight went out and had to replace the bulb. As of late (2/10/2002), the engine has been performing flawlessly and doesn’t use a drop of oil in between 3000 mile oil changes. I use Pilot Road (PR) tires and I think I’ll ride about 9,000 miles on rear tire and nearly double that in the front. The Pilot Roads have, I think, much better grip on the road when compared to Macadams, but wear just as long. I had the valves checked at 18k and most were fine except one which, oddly, was rather loose. All fixed now but the carburetor may need some more adjusting as it now tends to stall more easily than it used to. This is mostly an annoyance, however, so no real significant problems to report. I recently replaced the battery (2/5/2004) which was very expensive to go OEM and also replaced the rear brake pad. Apart from routine maintenance, the bike is working very well and I ride it nearly every day and am nearing 26k miles. One of the virtues of living in Florida though oddly, it’s better to ride in the winter. Summers are nasty hot and wet. update 6/15/2004: new tires (pilot road). No problems; just routine maintenance. The carbs could use a minor adjustment (running slightly rich) but no big deal. Gotta love Honda. Update (5/3/2005): no changes, still running fine. Picked up some nails in my tires courtesy of the hurricanes (yes, plural) - aarrrrgghhh!. Chain and Sprockets replaced 1/21/2006 (33k miles on OEM chain) Apart from the usual mainstenance; the machine is running fine and I still love to ride it! 10/29/2006. Had the valves adjusted at 37250 miles as well as the front tire and brakes. Four of the valves were off and in need of adjustment but nothing out of the ordinary. The new brakes really make the bike stop very quickly which takes some getting reacquainting. Still, the thing works and runs great with no problems that i can tell. Update 50,000 miles: Still works quite well. Just had the rear tire replaced (11/16/2008) and new brake pads in the rear.
Comments:
This bike is an absolute joy to ride. If one judges a bike solely on quarter mile timing, then this bike isn’t for you. V-twins aren’t especially quick on the straights but when pulling out of a corner, V-twin torque is welcome! I don't think the mileage is all that bad for a 1000cc engine; most new liter sport bikes don't do much over 35 mpg (about what I get) and generally run on premium. VTRs, with their low compression ratio, run great on regular grade fuel so the cost per mile is about the same. I usually get about 110-120 miles before the low fuel warning starts flashing which is a bit below average but not much worse than most liter sport bikes. I think Honda missed the mark and should have designed this bike with Interceptor like ergonomics for sport touring. The marvelous and accessible torque combined with such usable and tractable power would make this bike a pleasure to ride long distances. Also, the 'L' type engine configuration gives 1st order vibrations but minimal 2nd order vibrations (the buzzy vibrations that plague I-4 engines). At 80 mph, the handle bars are eminently smooth and all you feel is the V-twin growl from the engine.

Accessories: Powerbronze Windscreen, Mirror Extenders, Stanley/Raybrig HD Bright Bulb, Fender Eliminator Kit, Sargent World Sport Seat, Carbotex hugger, Scottoiler, LP Gold Bike Boltz and oil filler cap.
Modifications: 1000RR Forks, Galfer front SS and Goodridge Kevlar Rear Brake Lines, EBC HH front rear pads, Jardine high mount slip-ons, K&N filter, and Factory jet kit. Removed all the PAIR crap, Fox twin-clicker rear shock, Factory +4 degree ignition advancer.
Problems: Just the usual: Used to backfire through the carbs. Jetting and carb sync fixed that. 3/1/00 PIAA bulb burned out after several thousand miles. Replaced it with a Stanley/Raybrig Heavy Duty one. Not quite as bright. Hope it lasts longer. 10/00 Road Atlanta blew the packing out of CF cans and melted/deformed/discolored CF. Sent back to Hindle and they resleeved with Ti.
Comments:
Galfer Green pads went away after a while. Tried DP HH+ pads and they are lasting longer and are more consistent. 3/15/00 Dynoed at 106hp/67 ft-lb torque with stock jetting, filter, and bafflectomy. 4/1/00 Having problems with the Factory jet kit. Need bigger mains than what is supplied. Gained lots of midrange with recent mods, but lost 3 hp up top. Found the almost perfect jetting: 188/185 Mains, 2.25 turns on mixture screws, Needles 4th from top, STOCK IDLE JET. 4/01 Racetech Gold valves and back to 10wt oil in forks. WOW!!! Rear feels like crap now. Raised fork tubes ~1cm. 6/01 Finally recieved the Fox twin clicker shock. Installed with no problem. Still getting suspension settings worked out. Front now feels different since the massive change to the back of the bike. 9/01 I love this bike! Track day at VIR North really lets the new suspension do it's work. What a great all around bike. 5/02 Changed to 15w oil in the forks due to lack of rebound damping. Safety wired for track days. Added Pyramid DB windscreen a while back and also Carbone Lorraine brake pads in the front. 520 chain conversion is holding up just fine with very little stretch. Check out my website. Lots of GREAT INFO on the VTR!!!!
