Marc's Motorcycle Page

I bought my first motorcycle (a 125cc Honda CB92R Benley ) in 1962, although I owned a couple Vespa motorscooters before that. I've called myself a motorcyclist ever since, and have had the pleasure of owning over 70 different motorcycles, 4 of which I still have. While I owned the Benley, the bikes I lusted after were the ultra-rare Honda CR93, and the even more rare Tohatsu 50cc twin GP bike.

I did a bit of roadracing when I was a teenager, including winning 3rd place (and $37.50, thus becoming a 'professional' motorcyclist at age 17) at the 1963 Portland Oregon Rose Cup race at P.I.R. I desert raced in AMA District 37 for quite a few years in the 70's, and rode the US National Observed Trials series in '89 and '90. I was an MSF Instructor (and a Washington State Motorcycle Safety Program Instructor) from 1986 to 1997.

My Favorite Motorcycle Roads

St. Maries, ID to St. Regis, MT

This is a great little road which follows the St. Joe river up past the little town of Avery (watch out for Officer Homer, in a brown SUV, he's got Radar and a quota to fill!). This road crosses the Bitteroots just north of the more well-known Lolo Pass, but has less traffic. There's about 12 miles of dirt road from Gold Summit to St. Regis, but it's very well graded and no problem for a sport bike.

Highway 20, from Kettle Falls, WA to Tonasket, WA

This road crosses the Kettle River Range at Sherman Pass (5,575') and has some great twisty bits. The town of Republic, about half-way, has a couple of rustic resturants.

Highway 395, from Pilot Rock, OR to Mt. Vernon, OR

Great high-speed stuff in the northern part, more twisty stuff south of Long Creek — watch for the great vista just south of Long Creek. There's a nice rest area at Battle Mt. Summit. Watch out for Deer and Antelope, particularly at dusk!
