I’ve always had issues with getting a proper oil level check in the oil window. The manual says to “run the engine to operating temperature, then shut off and wait 10 minutes for the oil to settle”. Unfortunately this has never worked for me, as the oil level always completely fills the window when I try this method. But then if I let the engine cool overnight, the oil level is usually down near the lower line. Help please. Back then a few - including mine - had the problem, but most had not. Many solutions were suggested, including wrong type of oil, bike was not on even ground, hadn't been sitting long enough, was not hot/cold etc etc, but no solution or explanation was ever found. Whenever I change the oil and oil filter I pour EXACTLY the specified amount of oil in it and run the engine. After shutdown the oil glass will remain full for around 24 hours after which the oil level begins to appear in top of the sight glass. After another 24 hours the oil level will finally settle slightly under the middle of the glass and remain there - even where it should have shown at max level. This is just a peculiarity I have learned to live with. It has now lasted 28 years and over a quarter million kilometers, so it doesn't really worry me :) Ped '96 "Black Stealth" GPZ Denmark 16. nov. 2025 21.22.57 Jens Libak Pedersen : > The issue was discussed on this list many years ago. > > 16. nov. 2025 21.08.54 Micky Reilly : > >> Hi there! Are you sure you are using the correct amount of oil?? I dislike tha partial amount you are supposed to use. I used 3 quarts plus about 21 oz of a 4th quart. It ended up right in the middle of the sight glass. I have, years ago, put four quarts in with no issues. YMMV. Charles S.
