Rusted out spigot out of right side of motor.(replace). Rebuild instrument panel (busted back plastic) Replace front cowl frame. Fix and repaint tank. Busted choke cable and end assembly for right side. Access to a manual. What happened to the TransAlphelp web site? Speedo at wheel - Phillups head screw totally frozen so tight can't undo. Will need to take to Peter - the mechanic. How do i get on to the guy that sells the CDI holders that keep the CDI from getting crushed?

Comments:
This bike has been sitting for 5+ years. I had the top end rebuilt, and a general go over the entire bike. Mostly cleaning it up and getting things working. It was Rob Turton's (Tyres for Bikes in brisbane)old bike (actually Lara's - Rob's wife) and yes, is 18 years old but has not been hammered - just ridden a lot by lots of people to some far away places. I plan to fix it up, have the big TransAlp next to the KLX400R and do some dirt roads on the big bike myself. What do you all think about that?

This is the third TA i've owned. First was an '88 brakes were a bit dubious, esp. the rear drum. I then had a'96 version which was listed on this site. My brother dropped the bike in Czechoslovakia and broke his ribs. AA brought them home and he left the bike in a shed until I persuaded him to part with it (he thought the forks were bent - only misaligned!)We have a house in Spain that is 3,5km along dirt tracks and on the edge of the National Park with lots of tracks that are ideal for trail riding. So, Transalp is for local trips, beach trips and fun in the mountains.

Problems:
Broken speedo cable @ 13,000 km, Regular maintenance stuff: brake pads (gone through 3 sets of Honda @ 50/pad, going to try EBC next), chain and sprokets, battery, and fork boots. Doing steering head bearings now, removed races etc, just waitng for new parts from Honda

A Givi topbox made it the perfect commuter scooter. Kimpex grip heaters, a Happy Trails pannier rack and Touratech boxes make it a great adventure touring bike. I slapped a ScottOiler on there, too.

Modifications:
The bike came with a K&N filter, Corbin saddle, no rear fender and a high-mount front fender. I switched to a 16T front sprocket and Progressive fork springs with 11wt fluid.
|

Problems:
Sometimes it runs hot since it doesn't have a radiator fan; nylon speedo drive gear shredded itself. The tall countersprocket reduced of the vibes at highway speed.

Comments:
The most versatile bike I've owned; surprising in the twisties. I only wish it carried more gasoline and didn't need inner tubes.

Problems:
The little plastic speedo drive on front wheel. Cracked the lowers in a couple of low speed tip overs and replaced them and then purchased the crash bars. I always do things backwards.

I traded a 1986 Gold Wing with 50,000 miles on for this bike new even up in 1989. I've owned many bikes and this is the only one I have kept for more than 4 years. This is going to be the bike I keep for a long time. I will post a photo on the Wbmc web page under photo's.
