Accessories: SW_Motech Crash Bars, Scottoiler Mk7, Givi Monokey Side Luggage, Ermax Flip-screen (removed due to increased turbulance), Koso heated grips.
Modifications: Goodridge braided brake hoses, f & r - well worth the expense.
Problems: The Givi racks (Code PL131) were no problem to fit but the r/h one prevents easy removal of the rear side fairing for battery access (Wingrack fitted 06/03). The SW-Motech Crash bars fitted OK but again make removal of the lower front side fairings more difficult.
Comments:
So far, v. reliable. Now fitted with Michelin Anakees - more expensive than Metzeler Tourances, which were unobtainable locally.

Fitted EBC HH brake pads which noticably improve braking performance.10/01 fitted steel brake lines front and rear, brakes are now even better.
Problems: Head bearings naff after only 8k miles, replaced under warrantee. Lower suspension linkage bolt corroded and needed a blowtorch and big hammer to remove it, now replaced with plenty of grease. Rear shock has had it after 16000 miles. 3/02 Noticed that centre stand pivot bracket welds have split, have to get them rewelded.
Comments:
This is actually my wifes bike and she loves it dearly, I continue to modify it to her requirements.

Location: UK -- Stirling, Scotland
Experience: 30+
Bikes Owned: 10
Accessories: Just bought the bike last weekend (15 Mar 03). 9 months old with 5000 miles on the clock. Previous owner had fitted a higher screen, centre stand and crash bars. I'll order up a rack to fit my Kappa luggage. Apr '03 - Luggage (and Scottoiler) now fitted which makes the TA an ideal bike for touring, at least here in Scotland. I guess it would struggle at Autobahn speeds.
Problems: None so far.
Comments:
Like the bike a lot but I'm a little disappointed with the fuel consumption. Only filled it up twice so far but in each case got about 49mpg. This was after fairly sedate riding on country roads. Thought I'd get >50mpg. 05 Apr 03 - Bought a Haynes manual which covers the 650 Transalp. Haynes quote a Motor Cycle News review of the bike where they stated the AVERAGE fuel consumption was 33mpg! What's the point of reading road tests if they come up with garbage like this? Reading through the manual it appears that Honda didn't do the home mechanic any favours with the new design. Haynes suggest that the fairing must be removed before you can take the tank off. Crazy. (Though, to be fair, the Honda manual suggests that the fairing fixings only need to be loosened). 27/05/03 The TA has now covered about 2000 miles since I bought it and I really like it. Its especially great on the narrow, poorly surfaced single track roads in the more remote parts of Scotland.

Accessories: Motad crash bars. Scott oiler. Tank bag. Faimm air horns. Cibie 35 driving lights. Cigarette lighter power point. Garmin GPS III.
Modifications: I will change out rear shock to a Works Performance which will drop the rear approx. 1 1/2 inch. I haven't figured what to do with the front suspension to lower it yet.
Problems: Seems a good machine only too tall (33 1/2 inch seat height) for my 29 inch legs. I find a lack of storage in the fairing irritating, but then these plastic fairings cannot stand up to the use or abuse a fiberglass one can. One CDI unit needed to be replaced. The rear brake is a slackard. The front one not much better. And as with all Transalps, the fuel capacity if minimal for the 90 mph traveling and 250 mile between road houses that northern travel dictates. The windshield/driving position does leave one with some interesting (read concerned) (read terror) driving through the sometimes 50 mph crosswinds and clay/gravel/rain road combinations that the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska provide. I haven't ended up an RV hood ornament yet, but not for the lack of trying it from time to time. Of course, I could have slowed from 85 mph and helped the situation somewhat. Naah!

Bikes Owned: 2 (Yamaha DT125 1974 & Honda XL650V)

Modifications: Why? I´m totally happy as it is. Maybe would like to later on change the exhaust to get more muscular sound? Anyone have any experience ,please drop a mail!
Problems: Too little time for biking and the winters in Sweden are VERY long.
Comments:
Just bought the bike this spring after 25 years of being an ex-biker. Sofar 3000 km of daytrip and touring riding this first summer. Expecting the winter to force me to garage it soon. Don´t like, do we? - to get the bike all messed up by the salty snow we tends to get on the roads here in Sweden. Ischh ..

Accessories: Givi rack +topbox, clock, Scottoiler.
Modifications: High screen, braided brake hoses, mudflaps and c*** deflectors.
Problems: The bl**** chain! I came from 15 years of shaft drive bikes and I hate the chain. It needs adjusting just so (even with the Scottoiler) or the transmission snatches. I've had two chains break (I'm not a manic rider, really). The first one went because I left a soft link on the o-ring chain (my fault). The second one was repaired by a delaer and then broke at night in winter. Grrrr. Front brakes seized up (winter riding in UK). Fixed (at a price) by dealer. Next job is new stainless spokes.
Comments:
I'd wanted one for years. Finally got it as a parallel (ie non-official) import saving 20% on Honda's UK list price. Comfortable, handles OK, great riding position - suitable for a 53 year old who is past sports bikes. Can be pushed hard to cover plenty of miles in good time. Very fair fuel consumption.
