Accessories: Hondaline magnetic tank bag. Honda service manual. Lockhart swing arm stand. Ventura Bike Pack system ( http://www.ventura-bike.com ). Progressive Suspension TRK-2 Emergency Tire Repair Kit. Corbin saddle. Helibars. Zero Gravity Sport Touring screen.
Modifications: Removed DOT reflectors.
Problems: I bent the front wheel hitting a very bad pot hole. $434 replacement. The water pump has begun to leak very slightly and intermittently. If it gets worse I will need to replace the seal. Update: The water pump seal has stopped its minor leaking now for the last 6 months and several thousand miles. Maybe it just takes 32,000 miles to break in. I think my thermostat may need replacement because on cold days the temperature gage runs quite low. Replaced the fuel reserve sensor and now the reserve light works again.
Comments:
I have switched to the Dunlop D205 radials to get more miles from the tires and like them very well. The grip is fine for street riding and put 8000 miles on the first set. I have done all of the maintenance myself including checking the valve adjustment. At 21,000 all valves are within tolerance. I replaced the chain and sprockets at 18,500. Stock Honda sprockets and a DID 530VM Gold chain. The gold chain looks good with the gold brake calipers. The Ventura Bike Pack system is very nice. I have not used it on an extended trip yet but I think it will work very well. I took a trip from Tucson, Arizona to Mendocino, California last month following the coastal hightway, California 1 all the way up the coast. A magical ride and now I can really recommend the Ventura Bike Pack system. It worked flawlessly. I now have a Corbin saddle, Helibars, and Zero Gravity Sport Touring windscreen installed. These changes make the bike much more comfortable for longer rides. I am dissapointed in the quality of the Corbin saddle. I probably should have bought the Sargent saddle. At 36,000 miles replaced the chain again and also the battery. At 39000 miles mounted a new set of Dunlop D220 radials. My early impression is very good. Much more comfortable ride and good grip. Replaced the brake pads at 43700 miles for the first time. The old pads still had a few miles in them.

Accessories: Marsee 15L Tankbag; Large Rev-Pak Tailpack; Staintune Slip-ons; K&N Air Filter; Helibars; Zero Gravity Sport-Touring Windshield, smoke tint; CarboTech 5.9 gal. Carbon-Kevlar Fiber Fuel Tank, see <http://www.maxmoto.com/>; Modified the HeliBars to move the bars 1.6 inches further back & 2 inches taller, this change did require re-routing of handlebar wiring, throttle cables, new custom-length front brake & clutch lines, and 3/16 inch less spacing at the fork stops. Use a Ventura SportRack when sport-touring.
Modifications: Removed ALL side reflectors & warning sticker on tank, Removed license plate frame/light, relocated license plate up to rear reflector, & trimmed rear fender. Removed canister with all associated valves & plumbing. Removed PAIR air injection valve & plumbing. Removed fork "guards" & adapted black fork boots to protect the fork tubes & seals. Shimmed carb needles up 0.032" & set air screws about 0.5 turns further out. (4/15/1999) Had custom mirror extension made that REALLY work. (3/12/2000) Removed the too-LOUD-for-me Staintune slip-ons, and returned to the oem cans that I had modified from a 3-section reverse-flow design to a 2-section reverse-flow design. See my SuperHawk page referenced above for details. (3/1/2001) Forks re-valved + new springs & Penske rear shock from Lindemann Engineering.
Problems: Extremely slow coolant seepage on right side of motor; around 1/99 it went away on its own. I had some problems getting the CarboTech tank to fit my VTR correctly, but the increased range was worth the trouble.
Comments:
The handlebar change, noted above, has dramatically helped me fit the VTR better for long sport-touring trips. ... Its a Friggin' UniCycle ! ! ! I currently run a Michelin 90X rear tire because the 207ZR rears from Dunlop are only lasting 2000-2400 miles. I'm getting 3000-3500 miles per 90X. SOLD-2002!!!

Accessories: Corbin seat, carbotech carbon rearhugger/chainguard, smoke doublebubble windscreen, scotoiler
Modifications: M4 polished race system; loud but haven't heard any complaints, Custom paint on sharkskinz race fairing. Previous owner got it and put in a fog light for a headlight (daytime riding only, until I salvage an oem unit and go to town on the fairing). Installed LP flushmounts in the front since it didn't have anything up there. Also got the rear short stalks to match. Replaced the front pads with EBC HH: WOW what a difference seems like I've never felt brakes like this before. During the install I noticed Goodridge double line brake lines have been installed (Not as good as SS but oh well the brakes still feel great) Front end was feeling really soft after the brake pads so changed the fork oil. Put in a mix of 10 and 15, it feels great now that the fish oil is gone. At the same time I noticed that I definatly have some aftermarket springs in there but I have no idea as to what they are except that they're sinlge rate and are really stiff feeling (something like 13 1/2" long too???)
Problems: tapping noise coming from the rear cylinder head, pretty sure its the cam chain tensioner crappy rear suspension (need a fox shock TC or something similar soon, any recommendations)
Comments:
3/8/03 Got the bike home in the truck after driving all night in the rain 3/9/03 Crap still raining, but the bike is almost out of gas! Rode it down to the gas station and back safely but my friend dumped his duc right behind me (new front pads). 5/18/03 Took her out for a 400 mile run. I'm really loving this bike, except for the fuel range. I'm down to the wear bars on the side but still have the room in the middle! Has anybody tried the 208s on their hawk what does everybody think of the Sportec M-1. Ended up running Pirelli Diablos the rest of the summer and mounted another set right before fall. Front caliper seized and I didn't notice it until it had warped my front rotor. AHHHHH

Problems: AUG 97 - When warming up or after a longer high speed run(as im coming into town and getting warmer)I get a loud "ticking". Dealer says it sounds like piston slap. The honda area service rep says that all of them do it and Honda hasn't released a fix as of yet SEP '97 - Bike used to die when I pulled the clutch in coming off of a high speed run, I upped the idle screw a tad and have had no trouble since. AUG '99 - Problem with ticking left after around the 5000 mi mark and has only resurfaced a few times under more extreme temperature changes. Only problem left is my sore butt. FEB '00 - Now overdue for 16,000 mi tune up. Things I know I need are: Carb synch, steering head re-torqued, rear brake pads. SEP '06 - Bad regulator/rectifier took out the battery and several bulbs. Cleaned all contacts in the circuit and applied dielectric grease to connections. Went through several aftermarket junk r/r's before ponying up for new Honda part. It has been redesigned with a new cast shell featuring cooling fins so my fingers are crossed that the problem is solved.
Comments:
AUG '99 - Still haven't had the seat cut! But I am getting a custom cut just for my butt in 2 weeks. This should take some of the pain out of those 600 mile days! This is a bike I'll hang on to for many years. FEB '00 - Coming up on three year mark and still happy with my purchase. even after the fire of the RC-51 has started. Still think the VTR is one of the most underrated bikes out there. JUN '07 - Totally forgot about the registry. Bike has over 43k and still haven't cracked it up yet (knock on wood). Other than routine maintenance the only problem I have had has been the r/r. Not bad for a ten year old. Looking backwards here, that new custom seat really made a huge difference. Don Webber at Mr Ed's Moto did the job for me ( http://tinyurl.com/235qvf )

Comments:
Just picked it up last night. What a blast! It's now august and I can still say what a blast! No changes have been made yet, but I'm investigating a corbin seat and clipon changes to extend my riding range. Two tanks of fuel is all my butt and wrists will tolerate. The performance of this bike is flawless. I still can't get over how civilized a ride I get in traffic and slow speed city driving, with THE KICK immediately on tap.Its July already and I never seem to get enough time to ride. I just installed a K&N and new spark plugs and it pulls better than ever! The original plugs were only gapped to .030, is this standard Honda practice? This may account for some of the new found grunt as stock setting is.040. I've settled into the riding position quite nicely and don't experience any discomfort except numb ass at the end of a day of riding. Test rode a VTR with MIG slipons and stock jetting last weekend with the Honda ride program and was NOT impressed! Jetting is obviously required as the whole power band was worse than stock. Sounded good though. Also didn't notice any better handling due to weight reduction. It was very lean running as engine temp stayed above half the whole ride, and mine only goes to half when I'm stuck in traffic. Which brings me to my question, does anybody know where to get a Keihin CV tuning manual or parts listings? These carbs should be able mix twice the flow they do stock with just simple stock parts changes. The jet kits all seem to require permanent mods, and have a definite emphasis on max HPs with torque lost which I don't prefer. Also it seems the diaphgam spring is fairly stiff and a lighter one would allow the bike to rev faster. Nov.26 and all's well. Around Labour day I went to a D207 for the rear, and found it increased cornering stability. I like it. My front tire is now severely cupped, but still holds the road well (this is a D204). The only ill affect seems to be front end chatter on hard braking. A new set of leathers with crash padding in the pants has seemed to solve the numb ass problem! I am still in love with this machine, and right now the only mods I'm going to persue are opening up the airbox a bit along with needle adjustments, followed by reducing the final drive ratio a bit. The BC600 is preparation for this, also found out that the stock speedo reads high. Happy trails. Mar/01 I have acquired a factory pro stage 1 jet kit and I'm still waiting for +4 deg ignition advance wheel. I can't wait for this spring. I plan to open up the air box to fresh air as well as remove the PAIR valve system. Check back for an update! April/12/01; Installed the ignition advance and went for a short ride today, my initial impression is that the throttle is much more crisp. Also in the last month I had a flat on my rear tire (glass I think) so I got D207s front and rear. They are great. The front end feels much better in the corners. I can't wait for warmer weather and hotter pavement! May/22/04:took out two bits of plastic to open up access to intake and cleaned up the welds in the exhaust crossover. This makes things noticably smoother & revs climb a little quicker. I haven't installed the carb kit I bought yet as gearing down the final drive has brought the throttle response where I want it(full throttle always pulls the hardest).Removed all PAIR equipment, this has eliminated almost all backfiring. Sept.15/04 installed a Superbrace fork brace and took a quick test ride tonight. It definitely makes the front end more solid and confidence inspiring. I kept the fork protectors by sticking them to the fork brace with silicone seal. July/05 Put a new D208 on the front last month, this has really brought out the strengths of the superbrace. Something I forgot to mention last summer, I found the throttle position sensor out of calibration and reset it. This made a big difference to overall smoothness, cruising performance and idle. It was necesary to grind off the breakoff screw heads and replace them with 5mm machine screws.april/06 still runs like new, new battery installed(8 seasons on the original, not bad), hope to get a trip in next month.

T-Rex sliders: ground underside so that it could be moved forward as far as possible as it got in my way when hanging off. Works well as a lever to help control lean with knee during turn. Re-routed and shortened fuel tank breather hose; run down left side of engine with fuel cap and coolant overflow hoses to avoid rain issues. Installed vac fitting and tube to front carb to ease carb sync which i did(makes it easy, esp with ratchet strap holding up tank front-no need for aux tank for fuel while syncing). Rear brakes:ebcHH. Carrozzeria wheels:must torque significantly less than OEM. I didn't so I ruined bearings and had to replace(All Balls). Checked valves@27K first time and they were at intakes were all at .005in and exhausts were at .010in. Set them to +1(.007intakes,.013in exhausts). Ground shims and mic'd(sh forum).CCTs removed, removed springs and cylinder, drilled out and tapped and inserted double nutted bolts and tightened while valve covers were off to ascertain proper tension. This mod is described on superhawk forum-search CCT mod).
Problems: Reg/Rect failed along with battery at 16,000mi. Had R/R rebuilt and it failed shortly thereafter; replaced with finned OEM. Fuel sensor went at 14,000mi. replaced with new one.
Comments:
The superhawk is an awesome bike for many reasons. It is a pleasure to ride in that you don't have to be concerned with watching RPMs for passing/exiting turns because there is so much torque, so you can be a gear or two high and it doesn't matter. This is good in that you have more attention for other considerations such as road and traffic conditions instead of adding RPMs/gear selection to the mix. Also, the engine's back pressure acts as an auxiliary brake, unlike in-line 4's that are free coasting, so you don't need to be over braking to nix speed; this gives more controlled, relaxed and confident feel that encourages full lean. However, this engine braking, along with the high torque, can result in rapid rear tire deterioration requiring 2 rears for 1 front. This has not been an issue since I began using the Nick/Freddie style of trailbraking a couple years ago. This method uses both brakes in conjunction with positive throttle through most turns and results in greater front tire wear. i.e., more commensurate with rear tire wear. Consequently, front and rear tire wear evenly. I did demolish this bike and bought it back from my insurance company, so I have a re-constructed title. I lost front grip and low sided in a high speed turn on a cold day. Fortunately, no on-coming traffic or obstacles to hit and I had full protective gear on. I liked the bike so much I had to keep it. With 2 into1 carbon pipe like mine, got rid of a lot of weight of OEM mufflers and handling improvement is awesome.

Installed DP HH+ front pads.I don't know why but installing these pads has transformed my front brakes from soft to rock hard. This may be all thats needed to fix brakes!!!11/16/02 Check valves(1 out of spec)followed honda manual, made job harder than necessary.Replaced cam chain tentioners(just because).bt012ss in route. Will mount this spring.12/13/03 o12ss were great but rear did'nt last long enough.I'm mounting o12front with o1o rear.Just added 2,1.85 led clusters from custom dynamics.I have also made hardware to mount hondaline soft bags to bike for trips.Pics available

Modifications: Bobbed rear fender, removed handlebar end weights & caps, replaced stock grips with " Grand Touring" grips with a larger diameter which reduced palm fatigue.(12/07/01 update)Jardine RT-1 high slip-ons (lost around 14 lbs. & found 4hp with stock cleaner & jetting); Increased fork pre-load 1/2 line, rebound 5 min. clockwise; Increased shock pre-load two notches, rebound 10 min. clockwise; Moved clip-ons up 10mm (comfort thing).
Problems: Used 3/4 quart of oil on 3200 mile tour to Canada with visible oil smoke on hard acceleration at higher RPM. Also found oil residue in rear header pipe. I suspect an intake valve stem oil seal, stem or guide problem. Local dealer is in denial & sez put more miles on---- Will do. (Update) Miles later the oil consumption problem went away---Mark up one for the dealer. Recently changed from Castrol GTX 10/40 to Golden Spectro blended 20/50 oil which made normally smooth tranny (except 1-2 shift) even better (including 1-2). (Update) April,02-21,889 miles, Regulator/Rectifier did melt-down (literally). June,02-24,655 miles, Cam chain problems, all repaired under extended warranty.
Comments:
The VTR is one FUN ride & that is what it's all about for me! (Update)You all must know what a Squid is---well I must qualify as a Squof (squirrely old fart), over 60 & can't give up the rush of a good sporting ride (what's a Harley?). The good part is the rush now comes at below light speed, allowing the minor suspension changes to work for me with few exceptions. Turn-in was somewhat improved as well as dive & stability entering and exiting turns. The Hawk has been the perfect ride for me in the E. Tenn. & N. Carolina twisties vacations last July and October (Rental cabin in Maggie Valley). Florida riding sure has gotten dull--like the T-shirt they sell at Deal's Gap "Ride Florida--Eleven turns in 318 miles." I Plan to try the Suches Ga. neighborhood this spring. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If there are any more Squofs out there, let me hear from you. Also, always looking for a good ride in this neighborhood.(Update)Running better than ever but time for new rubber front & rear. Am OK with D204's except for early cupping on front tire. Seriously thinking D207's. Also, the new Metzeler Sportec M-1 sounds good. Any advice will be appreciated. (Update) Have enjoyed several track days recently at JenningsGP track in Jennings Fl, just south of the Georgia line near I-75 (HIGHLY recommended). Check them out at www.jenningsgp.com. I am now running on D208ZR's which provide very good traction & control with decent wear. TECH QUESTION: Recently noticed that lights dim when reving engine. Voltage was at 14+ at idle (1200 rpm) & 13V above idle to 5000 rpm+. All else tests normal according to the shop manual procedures so I replaced the regulator/rectifier (again) but the problem continues. The odds of two defective parts are very low, leaving me with a puzzle I hope you can help me solve. Many thanks for any replies------Update: Many miles later, no down side to the reg./rectifier problem yet. The battery has remained charged and the lights are good for the limited night riding I do and although they are not as bright as they might otherwise be, it is not noticable. I do carry the other reg./rectifier with me for backup, though. PS: Have enjoyed a couple of track days at Moroso Motorsports Park west of Palm Beach. They were well organized by Sportbike Track Time (sportbiketracktime.com) who have events at many tracks all over the states. Moroso (bikes & cars) is not in as good condition as Jennings (bikes only) but was still great! Anyone out there who has not done a track day MUST try it! The Superhawk is a GREAT track bike, all things being equal, capable of running with almost anything in the tight and giving up little to the HP monsters in all but the longest streights.

Accessories: Full Yoshi RS3 Race system, Dynojet Kit, B&M Filter, Carbon Fibre Hugger
Modifications: Full Yoshi RS3 Race system installed, with dynojet Kit and B&M Filter. The rear end has been raised by 5mm to improve steering(Big Difference). The rear guard was trimmed a lot(looks very sexy now), and a carbon Fibre Hugger installed. Front fork fluid replaced with 10wt, rather than the standard 7.5 wt. The next mod is to fix it properly and get higher rated springs. Wheels and forks polished. 01/04/01 replaced the front indicators with flush mounted ones. Now looking for something to replace the rear ones......
Problems: No problems to speak of. It used to jump out of second gear when new, but this has long since stopped. It took a little while to get the suspension right but was well worth the effort of stuffing around with it. Cam chain tensioner shit it'self not long ago, and as a result I had had to replace two inlet valves..(*%^$#$. It was a pretty easy job, and saves you about $300 if you do it yourself.
Comments:
What a bike. With the mods to the exhuast, jetting, and filter, it goes like a cut cat. Having problems making the tyres and chains last, but that's all part of the fun. The XG100's last about 5 - 6000 k's, and have the best grip/ wear ratio. Just have to take the time to warm them up before you go scraping the knees. I also seem to be having a lot of trouble keeping the front end on the ground.....I think that's got something to do with the right wrist though??? Raising the rear hieght improved the steering out of sight. It's very neutral now, and turns so fast it makes your head spin.

Modifications: Fender eliminator, Mobil 1 MX4T, 80/100W headlight bulb, Corbin saddle (love it), Zero G dbl bbl screen, pro gel grips, painted oil filter cover flat black (looks much better), throttlemeister, Galfer brake & clutch lines, EBC HH pads, gold valves, PAIRectomy, Factory jet kit. Velcroed a clock/thermometer to the top clamp. 3/5/02 TBR F/S (low mount AL cans), Fox twin clicker shock (+5mm on ride height adjuster), NWS C/F hugger (lopsided as HELL - moved L/R to inside of mounting bracket, now ALMOST straight), Saeng T/A steering stem mount and Valentine One radar detector (UNREAL performance but no headphone jack on main unit- seperate box an extra $50). Zenrails. 5/15/02 Added SJL products "screamer" siren to radar setup. Too expensive, but works well.(www.motorcycleradar.com). 8/15/05 Traded it in on an '05 GSX-R 1000
Problems: Black clutch fluid. Aluminum pipes scratch way too easy and highly polished finish shows EVERY little scratch and speck of dirt. Should have sprung for the Ti cans. RLOD at 100 miles aint gonna cut it. Bike ran like shit down low and got HORRIBLE mileage. Honda man says loose the K&N and rejet again. Now it runs fine....4/03 Resale value? WHAT resale value? 4/22 Voltage regulator quit at 35.5K miles. First real problem I've had with this bike.

Three bikes later, I still miss my SuperHawk.

Problems: Rectifier replaced twice. 3/2/2012 Put a Rick's rectifier on one month ago because the Emgo one stopped working. About March 2012 2nd gear started slipping badly. Split the case and replaced shift drum and two shift forks. While possible to do with the bike suspended, as I did, I highly recommend pulling the motor from the frame.
Comments:
Had it for about six years and 34k or so, but then it was stolen. Police just recovered it a month ago (9/10), four years afterwards! Had to fix fairing pieces, but the motor was good, valve clearances within spec, changed fluids, lockset, etc. Rode it about 10 miles a few days ago. Forgot what a nice spread of torque it has. Will commute on it tomorrow. 3/2/12 Valve clearances in the middle of tolerance with no adjustment necessary. Still commuting between snowstorms.

Accessories: MP3 Player, Escort Passport Radar detector, Boosteroo volume amplifier, Nolan n100,
Modifications: Repainted Ford Mustang Chrome Yellow with matching rims...took off all the decals except for the simple black Honda on either side of the tank, Stage 2 Jet Kit, Jardine RT-1 Slip-ons, Corbin seat, K&N filter, Braking front rotors, EBC Kevlar race pads front and rear, modified clip for front blake line & raised front bars as far as they would go....Some say it is dangerous but I just tightened the bars without risers....it made it cross country and back without any problem, Rear fenderectomy, Halogen headlight bulb, halogen (little useless light above the headlight)...I was tired of looking at the ugly weak yellow color compared to the headlight, Disabled P.A.I.R system by putting glass marbles inside the hoses at each end, New bar grips, Had some aluminum blocks custom machined to space rear passenger pegs so they clear the exaust and cut extra bracket off rear pegs.
Problems: Regular maintenance....chain, steering bearing, rear wheel bearing, another chain (don't buy the cheap one). Had problems with fuel starvation and the engine cutting out...rebuild of fuel petcock solved problem temporarily and a new petcock solved the problem permenently. The Cam Chain Tensioner broke...WHY WON'T HONDA OWN UP TO THE ONLY MAJOR FLAW ON THE SUPERHAWK!!!!!! Jet kit makes the bike move in Boston, but also makes the bike run like #%^$ at high altitudes...this can be compensated for by constantly adjusting the idle screw but is a pain. The side stand bends easy.
Comments:
Took the bike around the country for two months Canada..Wyoming..Washington..Cali..Vegas..Atlanta...Boston. This bike is sooo much fun to ride, and to increase your enjoyment here are a few helpfull things I learned. 1)the stock seat is crap..let Corbin make you comfortable for 12 hour riding days....You will ride better! 2)The Honda chain Lube is also crap. It is useless and messy. Use Bell-Ray Clean Lube it goes on thick like the stuff when you first buy the chain...it stays on the chain and only on the chain...you can see when it wears off. 3)The Jardine RT-1 exaust not only gets constant compliments from other riders (it is the best for the V-Twin) But the volume forces housewives in sport utilities on cell phones to notice you. 4)Don't try to use cheaper plugs, stick with the platinum, the V-Twin will eat the others before your next oil change and the different tips make the bike run better.
