Problems: *26 Apr 99* I see speeding citations in my future. Got pulled over last summer, and got lucky - I worked with the cop 25 years ago when we were in high school. I owe him one.
Comments:
Update 23 June 1998---Just completed a 3-day apex search with the entire Swollen Raccoon racing team(r). The SuperHawk ate the corners up like a police officer at a continental breakfast doughnut bar. The RKA 33-liter saddlebags worked perfectly, and proved to be stable and secure well into triple-digit speeds. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get 3,000 miles out of the OEM Dunlops; at least they seem to be fairly stable. Update *14July98* Changed oil to Mobil1 15W-50. Shifting seems slightly improved. Mileage has been upper 20s to very low 30s. *26Oct98* Went for first ride with D207s, and really enjoyed it. The bike seems to be easier to tip in, and it seemed a little more planted when getting on the gas hard out of corners. **Update-26 Apr 99** FINALLY! Riding season has arrived in Minnesota. Went for first ride of the season, and the VTR is still more fun to spank than a redhead in a French maid's outfit. Still runs great, and ridden at 8/10s, handles beautifully. **12 July 99** Still squirts out of corners like poop through a baby that just ate mushed sauerkraut. My riding teammates are envious. **15Sep99** Scuffing in new rear D207ZR due to puncture in old one. Gas mileage is slowly improving; now average lower 30's. **8 Nov 99** Sad days ahead...the bike has been stored for the winter. It ran great all summer. For all you people in the southern hemisphere; Enjoy your summer! Keep your VTRs on the road, and twist that right grip hard! -10May2000- After hard 270-mile ride, I noticed the rear D207 has started to cup. I've had that happen to many front tires, but not rear. **10Aug2000** Awaiting arrival of new rear D207. Went for a ride recently with a friend (less experienced) who owns a Suzuki TL-S with full-race Yosh pipes; that thing definitely has motor over the SuperHawk, but appears to twitch an awful lot in the corners. The VTR takes a set on corner entry, and then rolls well off the apex. His TL is nervous in the corner, needing constant adjustment. I prefer mine, thank you. **16May2001** Just installed new front and rear D207s and NWS rear hugger...now I'm ready for the trip to RoadAmerica for the races in June. Last rear D207 lasted 2,400 miles; front lasted probably 3,500 miles. **28 Nov 01** Stored my baby for the winter. Signed up for Reg Pridmore's track school at RoadAmerica next June. Can't wait. **15 Apr 02** Put 300 miles on with the Galfer stainless brake lines......they're great. Stronger braking, along with less pull required at the lever. **3 Sep 2002** Just received D208ZRs today. I'll swap them tomorrow night, and give them a try sometime next weekend. By the way, the VTR worked great at CLASS school at RoadAmerica in June. **15 Aug 2003** Loved the RaceTech front end at RoadAmerica track school in June. Way better through bumpy corners, and considerably less brake dive. The best mod I've done so far. D208s don't last worth a crap...2,000 miles out of last rear. **8 Dec 2003** Replaced cam chain tensioners (a little noise and a lot of paranoia made me do it), checked valves (still OK) and synched carbs. This rear D208 has 1,400 miles on it, and is at the wear bars from side to side....what a bunch of hooey. **19 April 2004** Replaced D208s with BT010 front and BT020 rear. Rear D208 was completely done at 1,650 miles. I have a riding mate who likes his BT010/BT020 combo on his Bandit 1200S...gotta be more durable than those Dunlops. **31 May 2005** Put on Bridgestone BT014s last night in anticipation of RoadAmerica track school....I'll report back next week. **06 July 2005** BT014s worked great at the track...no funny stuff, just stuck great. Not sure about durability yet; at 1,600 or so miles, I'm almost at the wear bars. **07 Feb 2008** Switched to Bridgestone BT021s last summer, and have been very pleased with them. Durability is pretty decent, and haven't slipped while leaned over to the edge of the tire. **16 Oct 2008** Purchased a 2008 Yamaha FJR 1300 in August. Don't worry, I'm still keeping the Honda, but wow, the FJR is pretty impressive. At this point, I'd say the FJR can do about 90% of what the VTR is capable of, but with way more comfort, and room for a passenger and gear, too. It's not like I ride either like Valentino, but I'm no rookie, either....both bikes' tires are void of chicken strips, so they're being used like their designers intended. After putting 2,100 miles on the FJR, the VTR feels like a torture rack. Hmmmm.....

Accessories: Ventura headlight cover, Scottoiler. Jan 02-Ventura sportrack and grabrail. Yellow Box Speedo Recalibrator by www.blackrobotics.com (Between 'normal' error and the bigger rear sprocket, the speedo/odometer exaggerates by approx 16%)
Modifications: Rear sprocket 2 teeth bigger, K&N standard replacement air filter, bellypan sprayed black, Two Bros cans. April 02- Brake lines with braided stainless cover. March 03- Chain&sprox kaput at 42k. Trying 43t rear. 3mm spacer on top of rear shock. November 03- Race Tech springs and Gold Valves.
Problems: Feb 04 (54000kms) - leaking coolant from the overflow on the water pump housing. Experts agree its the mechanical seal on the pump drive shaft. My dealer had 3 bikes with the same problem this year. Some were newer models so Honda may not have fixed this in the 2001 upgrade. I've replaced mechanical and oil seals, and the bearing as its very hard to get it out without killing it. Nov 03 - steering head bearings dead at 52k kms. Not really a problem. Feb 03 - Rear wheel bearing died at 42k kms. On removal, evidence of moisture + corrosion inside hub which got to the left (low side) bearing when bike on sidestand. Feb 03 Those horrible plastic fasteners on the inside of the fairing, they are a problem. I'm finally off to the fastener shop to get something better. Feb02 Killed my wrists for the first 1000km, then no problem. From new, occasional big misfire and cutting out at idle - sorted by the shop "..it was running a bit lean." Also increased idle speed. Later, coolant leak from near the resevoir. No, not the common fault in earlier models that you read about, this was a hose connection under the reserve tank that came loose. Very hard to locate and get at.
Comments:
After a series of inline fours it was time for a change. I picked the right bike. Jan 02 - Pillions are slightly less terrified now they have something apart from me to cling onto (Ventura grabrail). After 2 years and 34k kms theres no sign of me getting tired of this bike. April 02: The new brake lines are a big improvement - less lever travel, quicker response. I went straight out to the local hill road favoured by hoons and kept slowing down too much for the bends. Same squeeze = a lot more stop. Recommended. Nov 03- Race Tech fork modifications very effective and subtle. A lot less fuss getting around bends at speed. Worth it. I'm glad I did this rather than get an 04 model which definitely rides better than mine did. Now I feel I've made up the difference for not much $$.
For Sale: 61,000kms on the clock and no redesigned VTR for 05, so i've just bought an R1. Bye bye V twin, bye bye registry people. The R1 registry isn't very interesting.

Comments:
After owning singles and then a Honda CX650, I wanted up upgrade but did not want to go to an inline 4. Then Honda produced this marvellous 1000cc V twin, one look and I was hooked. I have found it a very comfortable motor cycle to ride, having done a few 1200 kilometer days. I AM GOING TO WEAR THIS MOTOR CYCLE RIGHT OUT. I love riding the bike and hope to be riding it for some years to come, as I cannot see anything on the market today that I would possible swap it for.

Important stuff: Me --the rider/passenger--, Ayrton Senna decal, Firestorm Decal, Puffy (TSAM) rides along once & a while, and -----AFTERSHOCKS Suspension Experts ad (650) 494-8849-----
Modifications: A fair amount ----I. Suspension **A)Dropped the fork by .5" to reduce rake/trail. **B)Increased rear ride height using a .25" spacer between the upper shock mount and the frame. (.25" is the difference in ride height between position 1 and position 3 preload at the shock). **C) AFTERSHOCKS (Palo Alto, CA. 650-494-8849)work: 1.Nitride coated fork sliders. 2.New .95KG/mm front spring rate and tuned high/low speed compression and rebound. (Note: the "rebound" only adjustable suspenion is a misnomer. Both compression and rebound feed off of the same low speed circuit and is the adjustment you can do with a screw-driver. The valve stack can be altered to suit whatever high speed bleed you want. Thank you Aftershocks!!!!) 3.Rear shock is 'salvageable'. Aftershocks rebuilt the rear and set the proper low/high speed com. & reb. damping. Stock has too much com. and negligable reb. I tried to find a lower rate spring so I can get the proper sag but can't find one. **D)'Reshaped' the left pipe for increased ground clearance. I wish I did it via high-mount slip-ons but ended up finding out the hard way that the stock bike is a bit high-lean angle corner clearance challenged. ----II. Engine Cardiovasculars **A)Opened up the airbox by removing some of the plastic in the frame spaces. -Removed all CA vent hoses. (Surprisingly, I lost 20mi of range despite loosing 100 deg. F in my EGT). **B)Again, recontured the left pipe for --uh-- better flow. (Its really time for me to get pipes to gain clearance and a jet kit along with it since a properly rejetted Firestorm makes the stock tractability look sorry.) ----III Tires (this is actually the second most drastic change that can be made) **A)Pilot Race (rear) and Pilot Race Soft (front). It improved flickability, but the increased grip obviates the 'tuned' flex. Handling balance is neutral. The only issue is tire temp. Takes forever to warm up and forced me to reshape my left pipe. **B)207GP. This makes the 'Storm even more flickable but is now bordering on ecxessive. The even compound also makes the VTR push up front. The aluminum frame now feels like it's made out of soft plastic. No tire temp. issues however. ----IV Tentative **A)OK, I would do good in pipes in more ways than one. But really, the 'Storm has soooo much torque that power dreams are just vain. **B)Braided front brake lines and maybe 320mm conversion. 'I swear, this thing doesn't want to stop, officer'. **C)One tooth increase in rear sprocket. Maybe this'll sloe me down. **D)Planning to strap on a Honda portable generator in the back seat since I won't carry passengers anyway (that'll take care of those cold tyres as I can bring tire warmers with me wherever I go, HEH!HEH!HEH!) -and probably the most effective and expensive- -LIGHTER WHEELS.
Problems: Same as others (weep-hole coolant seep, popping in decel, easy false-neutral between 1-2 which was solved by reversing the shift, low range w/ 133 mi best yet & engine died on me once @ approx 6000rpm shifting from 3-4 (never happend since)-Tiny tank -Limited cornering clearance. - Porky flickability -Frame flexes quite a bit during the hard drive out of a corner -Carbs choke under heavy decell............ Tankslappers??? Who needs steering dampers??? :0
Comments:
The easiest bike I've ever ridden (my EX500 is actually more demanding to ride). Not an all-out track bike, though. Just as I said, I only use the Firestom for cooking. After all, this IS Frank Purdue's superchicken. Occasionally I eat humble pie though, but not very often. But really, people like me better when I'm on my EX-500................I mean, who really needs more than 500ccs in the street, right Allan?...............------>RIDING TECHNIQUE UPDATE: You can work around the flexy frame by SLIGHTLY spinning the rear tire while leaned over on corner exits after the apex. The softness of the frame goes away with a little over-power (Just right, but not too much)and should give a nice drive out of the corner!!! Be prepared to 'help' the bike with your knee slider.... :)
For Sale: UPDATE FELLOW VTR OWNERS: Trying EBC's HH pads will cut your braking distances in HALF (especially from 3 digit speeds), but they are quite abrasive on the discs. Religiously observe the bed-in process, though.....My condolences extend to the family of the R-1 rider that passed away in an accident at Sears Point's 8A 10/02/00------>I FINALLY HAVE PICTURES!!!(above)<-----Check out my 04/13/01 encounter with Ducati Rider >Steve Rap<:....http://www.photobitstream.com/sys-tmpl/lionelfigueroa1/view.nhtml?profile=lionelfigueroa1&UID=10004

4,675 miles - Replaced rear tire with D204. 7,675 miles - Replaced front & rear with BT50's Rear D204 was still good, but had nail in it, front was badly scalloped. 13,600 miles - Replaced rear with BT50, front still wearing well, not scalloping like Dunlop did. 19,274 miles - Replaced front and rear with BT50's. Front could still have been used a little longer, maybe 1,000 or so miles more. New rear tire at 24,333 miles. 28,452 miles, replaced front and rear with BT54. 1,500 miles left in tires, but heading out on 3,000 miles trip. 28,452 replaced front and rear brake pads. Front, EBC green pads. Front pads were a little over 1/2 gone. Still noticed big improvement in braking after replacing.

Problems: The clutch has been a weak spot in the drivetrain. I bleed the hydraulics about twice a year, which helps a little. Now with higher mileage the clutch is just worn out. Thought my battery was shot after 35k mi. (I never remove it in the winter) and found out it was the volt regulator after the second battery died a month later. One misplaced grounding lug (always put on TOP of the reg. housing) cooked the new reg. and a third battery a month after that. The properly installed second reg. and fourth batt are just fine, thank you.
Comments:
This info updated 6/2008. A textbook lowside on 9/11/2007 (worthy of a Speed Channel slow-mo) has kept me busy looking for new bodywork, gauge pod, bars, and switchgear. I am very sad that I hurt my Big Red, but I will only give her up when they pry the throttle from my cold, dead hand. Speaking of totalling, I signed on with Progressive in Feb 07. Premium was $158/yr with $500 deductibles. I had crash checks within 72 hours for my jacket and the residual value of the bike (helmet was undamaged, otherwise they would have covered that too). Then, a few days later, I received a friendly reminder call to cancel the on-road portion of my policy, so I could get a $54 refund. Now that the bike has effectively no monetary value, I am skipping the collision, so my rate is $79/yr.

Bikes Owned: Lost count
Accessories: My own custom designed/printed tach face. Hornet Electronic Deer Alert. Yes. As far as I know, it works! Ran it on my Jeep before this bike (Only time I hit a couple of different deer, at different times in the Jeep was when I forgot to turn it on). I still have the Jeep, but I know I can survive most vs. animal hits in the Jeep. It, MINIMALLY, WILL hurt, getting bounced off the bike. Anyway, will be testing the "Hoppy Trailblazer" on the Jeep soon...
Modifications: Prev owners added... Tinted LED brake light/turn signals (single housing). Staintune cans. Maybe adjustable CCT's. LED dash lights. (((I'd love to see pics of common 'stock then modded', before/after style pics so I can figure out what's been done.))) I added... LED turn signal/mirrors. "Ballistic EVO2" battery (OMG it is SO LIGHT!!). New adjustable folding hand levers. About to add... a 35w 6k-H/L HID headlight (waiting for better weather in my garage... or heaters). And a pair of CREE cornering lights... just got to find the right ones.
Problems: The first 3 miles from my house to the next higher speed limited road... in either direction... IS 25MPH!!!!!!!!!! Then I get to go 35. 5 miles from home I can legally do 55. All track worthy corners... 29 in the first 3 miles alone. Otherwise, No, no... It's my own problem that I have to follow speed limits. I lead a tortured existence.
Comments:
She's a used bike to me, so, I don't know. Trying to hunt down prev owners. Last guy to own it, wrecked it. I'm in process of repairs (looks great so far!) and she is more than road worthy. Most of the damage is cosmetic. A few road rash scars in different metal parts. I think that I will paint those brightly... like badges of honor for the bike. We'll see.

Comments:
Still not enough fuel range. Goes well, Handles well, sounds great, surprisingly comfortable. Looking for a taller windscreen to keep the dog happy. Also thinking of making it a naked VTR, but it looks a bit 'soft' for that.

Accessories: I installed my Eclipse standard tankbag and it works just fine. I now have lots of miles on the Staintune pipes and REALLY LOVE them. Rode without the baffel...WOW really love them now. I stoped at the AMA Museum and three people came over and had to know about the pipes and what they were because the sounded sooooo good! Installed the Eclipse sport bag and it works fine. K&N airfilter @ 12,600 miles. Just love this bike more and more the more I ride it!
Modifications: Installed the Staintunes and love them!! They are not the cheapest but very nice with excellent quality workmanship. NEP throttle lock, K&N airfilter.Installed Galfer Green front pads. Installed Galfer steel brake lines, 2 replacing 3 with a double banjo bleeder bolt. Love them brakes now! Just had the valve lash checked at 18,612 miles and NO ADJUSTMENT needed! Gotta love that Honda quality! Also had the carb needles shimmed .060 does feel like there is some more power in mid-range but I'm no racer and so it's tough for me to tell the differences.
Problems: None! It's fantastic. Clutch fluid turned black. I changed it! I think the black comes from the black rubber lines. I did go with SS lines over last winter. Tires!! new rear @ 4,200 miles at 7,000 I need both tires!! As a friend once said, "Yea, I'll need new tires soon, if I'm lucky!" I got the anti-freeze weep! Never touched the anti-freeze weep and it cured itself!! ;-) Had the stumble when stock.. put on the Staintune pipes it went away... put in K&N airfilter stumble came back now I had the carb needles shimmed .060" and we'll see if that cures the stumbe!? Still some VERY minor stumble since the .06" shims so that helped. With 22,000 miles I'll need new chain and sprockets over winter.
Comments:
Not enought time to ride it!! They seem to expet me to work!! ?? I love this bike!! Mileage has gone up slowly. Still pretty low but I didn't get this to get super mpg! Installed new chain DID, sprockets (stayed with stock size) and tires over winter. Now it's Spring 1999 and damn, it feels great to ride it again!

Comments:
This bike has a great comfortable riding position and very stable handling. I had always hoped that Honda would refine it into a good sport-touring model with a bigger tank and removable hard bags. The best thing about it is a abundant low-end torque as well as wide and flat torque band. The 100+ hp at the rear wheel is plenty for me, and I've seen an honest 150+ mph (speedo is wildly optimistic, and I based it on gearing and RPM). The suspension and brakes are just adequate for casual street sport action. This is my 4th Honda street bike, and my 1st was the original Super Hawk (CB77)

Comments:
My last bike was a 900RR which in a straight line was a little faster, but the way this thing comes off corners is absolutly amazing. One of my riding buddies owns an R1, and he can't stop going on about the way mine squirts of the corners. Even with all the numbers the R1 throws out there when you're in a long 2nd gear corner coming out in the top of the R's the R1 has a tough time staying close, and not even close when it comes to the sound. This bike is the first bike I have been able to really slide around too, it's so controlable. As you can tell I absoutly love it. There is nothing out there that I would rather own. That Honda reliability always keeps me coming back. I sold my HAWK GT with 25,000 miles with no problems, and my RR with 32,000 and no problems there either, and this VTR already has 34,000 and still going strong!
